This combines horseback riding with rafting or tubing. For extra-adventurous folks, Indian Hollow Stables also offers a “Saddles and Paddles” ride. Special interpretive rides are also available on certain days when the guide will give a nature lesson and a history lesson. There are several packages to choose from: half-hour rides, one-hour rides, and two-hour rides. HEAV has sponsored a Homeschool Day for this field trip! Norfolk Botanical Gardenīe sure to bring your camera to this field trip! It is a beautiful place any time of year, with extended hours from April through mid-October. They are located at 1255 Big Bethel Road in Hampton, 75. The Nature Center offers many programs, and homeschoolers are welcome, but you need to make reservations. You can go fishing, picnicking, and visit the Wildlife Center or gardens. The park has a nature facility, biking and hiking trails, and a horse trail too (bring your own horse!). It has now been reclaimed, and there are 456 acres devoted to environmental and wildlife studies. It’s hard to believe that this land was once devastated by mining pits. You may rent bikes and arrange for a shuttle to pick you up at your ending point. It is 33.4 miles long, but you can choose to do just a section of it. It is very picturesque as you ride across trestles, over streams, and through the Jefferson National Forest. Much of it is shaded, and there is a gentle downhill grade, so you can coast most of the way. This is a bike path on an old, narrow-gauge railway. NATURE-LOVER FIELD TRIPS Virginia Creeper Trail
Homeschool Resources: Counselors, Testers, and Tutors. You don't want to miss lunch, and you surely don't want to be left behind. If you are supposed to meet your group for lunch or for loading onto the bus, you should keep an eye on the time. Kids don't always think about the dangers that come with certain places, so think about the potential hazards before you go, and remember not to push or pull on friends.

You may visit a factory containing equipment with moving parts, or a museum with rooms full of pottery and glass, or a riverside with fast-running water. For your own safety, be mindful of potential dangers and don't assume you can tug, pull, tease, or touch things safely. Some field trips will take you into contact with animals or plants. They can't afford to give too much attention to one "squeaky wheel," so they will probably be intolerant to distractions. Chaperones have a big responsibility, watching after so many students at one time. You should respect any chaperones and listen to them as you would your own teacher or parents. If you break this rule, you could end up with the teacher as your partner! Don't ever wander off on your own, or your trip could end badly. Listen carefully when the teacher gives instructions about sticking with the group or sticking with an assigned partner even when going to the restroom. You could end up sitting on the bus while the others enjoy the destination. You don't want your day to end early, do you? Misbehavior on the bus can get you into trouble and ruin your day.
